The subject
What it involves
Senior Middle Chemistry runs from atomic structure and bonding through energetics, kinetics and equilibrium, into acids and bases, redox and electrochemistry, the periodic table and the common metals and non-metals, and on to the organic families and the polymers made from them.
The depth is the thing most families underestimate. Ionisation energy patterns, solubility product, buffer calculations, electrode potentials, Grignard reagents, the Cannizzaro reaction and Friedel–Crafts substitution are all examined. A student revising from IGCSE material is preparing for a different paper.
The paper is set in English, while a great deal of the teaching happens in Chinese. That gap shows up in the multiple choice, where one misread word costs the whole mark and there is no working for an examiner to give credit to.
Approach
What we focus on
- The paper's own conventions, drilled until they are automatic — concentration in mol L-1, volumes in mL and L, proton number and nucleon number, relative molar mass.
- Calculations worked by a method rather than by memory: moles and titration, equilibrium and solubility product, pH and buffers, electrode potentials, and gas volumes with the stem checked for whether it says STP or RTP.
- Organic chemistry learned as a map of families and reagents, so an unfamiliar compound can still be placed.
- Apparatus questions answered from what is actually drawn, not from what the diagram is usually called.
- English terminology fixed alongside the Chinese, because the paper asks in English.
Suitability
Who it suits
- Senior Middle students sitting Chemistry as an examination subject.
- Students taught the chemistry in Chinese who lose marks reading an English paper.
- Students who were comfortable at Junior Middle and have just met equilibrium constants, ionisation energies and organic mechanisms for the first time.
- Students sitting both UEC and IGCSE Chemistry, who want the overlap taught once and the extra UEC depth taught properly.
- Anyone planning medicine, pharmacy, engineering or a physical science at university.
Progression
Where it leads
Chemistry is the subject that opens or closes the science pathways. Medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, chemical and materials engineering, food science and most foundation programmes ask for it by name.
Because the syllabus sits at AS depth, a student moving into a foundation year or A Level finds a large part of the first year already familiar — which is worth knowing before choosing a route.
Check the specific university's UEC entry requirements early. They vary more than most families expect, and the grade a course asks for in Chemistry is often the one that decides the offer.
Our teaching
How we teach it
- Topic, worked example, then the paper's own question formats — in that order, every time.
- Multiple choice treated as a skill of its own: eliminate first, then check the units before committing.
- Definitions and formulae revised every week, because the paper asks for them plainly and they are the cheapest marks on it.
- Timed past-paper practice, marked with the reason for every wrong option rather than a tick and a cross.
