Senior Middle UEC results are reported on a nine-point scale, subject by subject.
| Grade | Band | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| A1, A2 | Distinction | The top band —
| B3 – B6 | Credit | A solid pass —
| C7, C8 | Pass | Passed, but below credit |
| F9 | Fail | Not passed |
The distinction most requirements turn on is not pass or fail but credit: B6 and above. A university asking for a number of subjects usually means subjects at credit, so C7 and C8 satisfy fewer requirements than their name suggests. Junior Middle uses a simpler letter scale and is not read the same way.
There is no overall grade
UEC reports each subject separately and produces no aggregate, no average and no total. Anyone quoting a single UEC "score" is quoting something a university calculated, not something the certificate says.
That calculation differs by institution. A common approach abroad is to convert the letters into points — A1 as 1, A2 as 2, down to C8 as 8 — and add the best four or five subjects, where a lower total is better. Which subjects count, and how many, is set by the receiving university, and two universities reading the same certificate can arrive at different figures.
What this means in practice
- Read the requirement, not the rumour. Requirements are written as specific subjects at specific grades. "Five credits" and "a total of 12 points in the best five" are different tests, and a student can meet one and miss the other.
- The subjects that count are usually named. A science degree wants the sciences; a commerce course wants Mathematics and often Accounting or Economics. Strong grades in subjects the course does not count do not help.
- Nothing is averaged away. One F9 does not pull down the rest, but it also cannot be hidden by them if that subject is one the course requires.
Results
Results are released some weeks after the examination and are checked online with the examination number, with report slips sent to schools. As with every other part of UEC, the result is per subject — the certificate lists the subjects sat and the grade awarded in each.
